Rambly greetings from Iowa

Hi, all. I've been lurking here, and it seems you guys have a really nice vibe--less of a "how many double Cs can you do before bleeding?" scene than some sites I've visited on "the internets."...

I'm a trumpet grad student at the University of Iowa, where I study with David Greenhoe. I'm a recent graduate of Lawrence University, where I got a BM in trumpet and a BA in English. (I'm not the kind of guy you'd want repairing your broke down engine, but I'm good for something, so the liberal arts brochures tell me.) At Lawrence, I had four amazing years studying with John Daniel, a very bright guy and a terrific player who really understands how to play the trumpet and how to teach. I had a year before that at Lawrence with Bob Levy, who routinely ridiculed me into counting and subdividing on at least a weekly basis. I'm originally from the northern exurbs of Chicago--Antioch, to be exact. I love--no, I need--disjunct sentences. [image] [image I also misuse tags, can't get around a computer. Forgive me.
My parents are professional musicians, and the choice was to love music or hate life. I've just about made up my mind on the loving music thing. I've been on an early music kick lately--Mauchaut, Gesualdo, Josquin, even Monteverdi--this is stuff that would wig out even the heppest cat! I can't live without Bach, Handel, Telemann--the patterns! and I love Stravinsky, John Adams, and Mahler. I'm a huge Brian Wilson fan. I think romanticized baroque is really fascinating and more "authentic" baroque when played with passion (i.e., Butler/Geyer) makes me drive off the road. Give me Miles, Clifford, Louis, harry sweets edison, Dave Douglas, and--gasp!--I even really dig Wynton. Classically, I'm getting this hankering for Guy Touvron. What a sound! I'm not so much into big orchestral playing now, but it's because I just got this beautiful little Schilke C6. It may not be my first choice for Tannhauser, but she's my baby: have French-music-playing horn, will travel.

Of course, there's alot of music, there are alot of instruments, and there are alot of composers I don't dig, but I won't list them here, because internet trumpet sites are no place for trash-talking or tearing down those things we secretly or those players we secretly envy... right?

Thanks for the site!--

Peter

Welcome to the Trumpetmaster Peter.

Glad you decided to come aboard!

Enjoy your stay.

One of our favorite members has just started at Iowa this year and won a spot in the jazz lab.

Look up Silverstar at Iowa.

Welcome to TM, and enjoy your time with Professor Greenhoe. He's great, though I didn't work as hard for him as I should have. Please tell him that Ray Smith said "Hi". (I studied with him in 1979-1980.) I spent some of my fondest trumpet years there at Iowa.

Welcome to the forum -- lots of very nice people here.

I second the idea of looking up Silverstar. She's a great young lady! I bet you two could be great friends.

In defense of that statement...

Hey, I'm not criticizing anybody's chops! All I'm saying is that TH can sometimes feel like the trumpet warm-up room for an all-state audition.

I haven't quite perfected the art of the "hi, somebody told me about you on a web forum social skill." That, and I really don't know anybody yet outside of stand partners and financial aid office employees. You see, one week into school, and my fiancee comes to visit. (She's a violist, but listens to jazz with me and wants to be a singer now. It reminds me of the old joke about the jazzer who's about to die, and gets invited to join purgatory's big band...) Ah, women. So great. yet the greater they are, the more you want to spend time with them. it's detrimental to one's progress to find someone!

The girl left Iowa Saturday afternoon to embark on a semester abroad...Saturday evening I start searching for a better internet trumpet site. Coincidence?
