Ready to learn more

Hey all, want to say thanks and hello.

Played a Holton Collegiate from 4'th grade through college - mostly for fun, of course. Never owned another horn during that time. It was bought ca 1966 with 39 books of S&H Green Stamps. Remember all those stamp books? I envy you real musicians. I play a little piano and wish I were better.

Lost it a few years ago and just bought an Olds Ambassador that needs a little work but sounds great. I can do the soldering but there are some small dents that should come out. I'm wanting to know what effect dents have on the tone and tuning? If there is one at an antinode I would expect it to have a bad effect!

Going to take it to a shop near here that does repairs for the local rental house for the schools.

I'm also looking for a cornet. I like the mellow sound. Will post on another forum.

My 12 year old son plays trumpet - renting a Yamaha 2335 (can't stand the renting thing - hope to hook him on an older horn - but he is all into the lacquer thing with a new instrument). The price of the rental - even if we were to buy it, is beyond what a better older trumpet would cost, IMHO.

I'm looking forward to sharing the playing thing with him - a good father-son activity. 3 boys, all as different as can be!

So - Howdy!

Yeah, kids don't really typically appreciate horns for how good they are in reality. The shinier the better! I would tell my kid "No, you have to play this horn, and it's a great horn... better than that student model Yamaha". Hey, if they decide not to play just because their horn isn't shiny then maybe they shouldn't be playing in the first place.

Small dents will not change the playing qualities appreciably unless they are in the leadpipe. The finest trumpets use irregularities in bore size to make the instruments more playable. That is why we "discuss" gap and valve alignment to extents that are far beyond any common sense or scientific proof.
Your emotional makeup will probably "believe" more in an overhauled horn and that could just make you a better player!
Music is a worthwhile hobby to share! You have one very lucky child!
