Remorse and Redemption--Schilke

I made the mistake of pawning the Schilke B5 my father bought me when I was in high school. I have regretted that decision ever since. I have also lost a good deal of my ability to play since that was the only trumpet I had. I have decided that I do not want to lose the talent forever and am looking to replace the B5. I am looking at a used B9. Any thoughts on the pros and cons and what to expect as reasonable for a price.

I have no idea what my father paid for my old B5 used, but a baseball mascot stepped on it at a function once so it had considerable repairs done after he purchased it. I know I could surely use a trumpet of lesser quality considering my current skill level, but I think the replacement might make my Dad feel a little better about the whole situation, not to mention the nostalgia value for me.

I appreciate the words of wisdom you may have to offer.

Why not look for another B5?

They are always available if you look around a while.

And welcome to TM.

Re: Remorse and Redemption--Schilke

Very true. Any ideas which is the better quality horn? I know they are different bore/bell size/bell material, but since the B9 was made later, would it be a better horn as a whole, or just different.

Re: Remorse and Redemption--Schilke

I am not sure that Schilke makes a B9, (did they ever nake one?) I have never seen one.

Here is a link to the Schilke B series trumpets.

Re: Remorse and Redemption--Schilke

I was going to post that a B9 isn't in my catalog. As you say, it is new and I am guessing new this year.

That B5 with copper bell must have been a nice horn. Copper bells always look good. I have a cuprion Conn. I hope to play some Schilke's next week. I was partial to the #3 taper bell last year.

Good luck on your hunt. I wish I had my original Getzen.

You have tempted me to play a B6.

The way I see it, you've learned two valuable lessons.
1. Always redeem your pawns.
2. If your instrument is not in your hands, it is in the case.(hard case)

I'll bet your father has already forgiven you, AND you still have the desire to play the trumpet, so just "abide dude!"

The Schilke trumpets with a copper bell, like the B5 & B6 are ALWAYS plated, either silver or gold.

You will not find a Schilke with a copper bell that looks copper.

Re: Remorse and Redemption--Schilke

From the research I have done (which could be false) the B9 was the last of the series before they started the X. The B5 did have a silver plated bell and was great before almost every tube and connection had to be re-soildered. Sometimes you don't know what you have until it is gone...

Re: Remorse and Redemption--Schilke

Schilkes are great horns - you can't really go wrong with a Schilke. I played a B6 for a number of years, and while I found Bbs that worked better for me, I will never give up my Shilke P5-4 - it's perfect in every way! You may also want to try out a B1, or an X3L with a berrylium bell - two very nice horns I tried that belong to a friend of mine. Good luck, and welcome!

Re: Remorse and Redemption--Schilke

Before I bought a gold plated, tuning bell, B3L [# 6154] from Renold Schilke back in 1973, I had played on Bach, Benge, Conn, Fr Besson, Getzen and King trumpets. I have never played another trumpet since. Although I do use a Bach 1 1/2 C [S back bore] mouthpiece that I had bought back in 1972. Even Mr Schilke couldn't put together a mouthpiece that I sounded better on! After 35 years my B3L is still playing strong and sounds great. After playing professionally for a couple of years I took it with me to North Texas State University, where it served me exceptionally well. I studied trumpet with Professor John Haynie and played in the concert band, jazz lab bands and experimental music ensembles. I can honestly say, my B3L is my most prized possession.
Hope you find a replacement soon!
