Salutations

Greetings all, my name is Douglas Park, but most of my friends call me 'Doc'. I am originally from Manhattan, but have been away from there for quite some time. Currently, I reside in Bangor Maine, but am expecting to move within the next six months or so. Between the center of the world and the border of Canada I have lived near Hudson, NY; and in Camden, SC; Great Lakes, IL; Pascagoula/Gulfport, MS: and Jacksonville, FL.

I first picked up a trumpet when I was around ten years old and played fairly regularly, through school band and outside events, until shortly after I turned eighteen.

At that time, I am sad to say, my career choices finally got too much for me to continue regular practice, and I bequeathed my original horn, a 'Bb' off the shelf (probably a Yamaha) to my little sister, who still owns and plays it.

Flash forward five or six years to about a half-year ago when I found myself with some extra time, and cash, and decided to go pick up another horn. For some reason I got it into my head that I wanted to leave what I remembered of the 'Bb' horns and move to a 'C' instrument.

All of my reasons seemed justified at the time, but looking back now, I am pretty sure that it had something to do with the shiny Conn 'C' from the old Elkhart plant (1976 or 77) sitting in the window that had a price I couldn’t beat coupled with my impetuous nature.

Since then I have been trying to re-train my ear to think in 'C' instead of 'Bb', and retrain my lips to buzz for hours without feeling like I just got done kissing cacti.

Things of note are that with my job I probably won’t do too much regular posting.

Re: Salutations

BTW, Doc, are you familiar with a small, rural town about an hour north of Bangor named Dover-Foxcroft? My dad was born and raised there. Quaint, pretty little town.

Are you a doctor on a submarine?

Re: Salutations

Welcome aboard, Mate. Are you a doctor or a corpman or do people just call you doc? I don't suppose you hang out with a sarcastic rabbit do you?

Re: Salutations

Josh,
I am familiar with Dover-Foxcroft. Sadly, I have only been through it, and never with enough time to stop, which is actually the story with much of Maine.

Stchasking and Tom Mac,
I am a corpsman in the Navy with just over six years in and am currently at my second duty station. Right now I am at a shore command, getting a little familiarization with the paperwork side of the service. My last posting was onboard a Frigate, the Stephen W. Groves (FFG-29), stationed out of Pascagoula, MS, though now it is in Mayport (Jacksonville) Fl.

I am sure that there is some sort of irony involved in the fact that the Ensign my previous was named after was from Maine, and here I am now.

I haven't been stationed onboard a submarine, and right now I don't see one in the future. The plan is to do three or four years with a marine unit, then go onto Independent Duty Corpsman school, if it still exists four years from now, then get back to a ship for another four to six, then find a nice cozy posting near a sandy beach to finish up the career.
