snazzypadgett will become famous soon enough
Snazzypadgett says hi!

Hello, TM forums! My name is Will and I beginning to play the trumpet. I bought an Olds Ambassador from the Fullerton factory from a local trumpet craftsman (he had replaced the valves and aligned everything properly--really a steal!).

I've never played trumpet before, but I am a dedicated musician--Piano and Composition major in Nashville, TN. So far, I'm absolutely loving the trumpet--I always wanted to play something with notes in high school in marching band, but my director wouldn't let me switch from percussion :/. So! I hate to...'toot my own horn', but I feel like i'm progressing pretty quickly! I've been practicing about 2+ hours a day since Saturday night, and I have gone from "how do I make the mouthpiece buzz?" to playing most of the notes up to concert F (1.5 octaves over the lowest concert Bb), which gives me a good range to play around with!

I'm having an issue, though. I have perfect pitch, and I haven't looked at any fingering charts. So I know all of the fingerings (it's pretty simple with the valve system as you know), but I'm learning them in concert pitch :/ So...reading music is going to be a challenge. I guess I'll figure something out once that bridge comes up.

I'd like to start out with a question. My mouth is pretty sore today, and I know I've been playing a ton for a true beginner, but I want to get out of noobie-land ASAP! Plus, it's fun of course :). I just wonder if I am maybe inhibiting progress by practicing so much? I only went for an hour today, so maybe my mouth won't be sore tomorrow? Is this a normal thing, or am I putting too much pressure on the mouthpiece?

Thanks! Looking forward to my trumpet journey! :]

Very welcome to TM, Will!

Maybe some others will disagree, but the normal thing for
a beginner is about 20-30 minutes a day.
Also dividing your practise time into 5 minute sets is important,
donīt play all 20-30 minutes in a row.

So my answer is "Yes, it could be!".

Try taking a whole day off at least once a week now in the
beginning. I do that myself and my lips like that rest . . .
