Total Newbie!

Hi everyone,

I am a guitarist/bassist who is fulfilling a dream I have had for a long time of learning the trumpet. Any tips for websites and other stuff I should check out?

Cheers

OK, here's one.

On the trumpet the same fingerings give you different notes. Is this a function of blowing harder/differently, lip position, or a combination thereof?

It's a function of hearing the notes; sort of like whistling or singing.

Yes. The lips start the air column vibrating, and the vibrating air column causes the lips to vibrate. It's a feedback thing, like plucking a string and holding your axe next to the amplifier. The two main parameters we can play with involve with air pressure are air velocity and air volume. Play with these.

Have fun!

Re: Total Newbie!

Welcome, you'll find anything you need here.

The same fingerings giving different notes has alot to do with air speed. Air passes through the horn in an ocillating wave created by the lips buzzing. The faster the air speed the faster the wave. The faster the wave the higher the note. Thats why you can get different notes with the same fingerings. The air is traveling through the same amount of tubing but at varying speeds. Hope that helps.
