I'm Gregory1969,and I come from Chattanooga Tennessee.I have been playing Trumpet for almost thirty years.I love old trumpets,I have two very rare and old horns now,But am always looking for that special find at rummage sales,yard sales and even pawnshops!So why don't some of you nice folks let me hear of some odd places you picked up a rare find,Iwould love to hear from you.

What are they and where did you get them?

I play a 1962 Conn 5A cornet with .485 bore using Bach 7 and Bach 7E and Weril W46 mouthpieces.
The Conn 5A was an eBay Buy It Now of $165 plus $16 shipping if I remember right.

Wish I could find a 1946-1952 Conn 22B in decent shape but dirt cheap, so if you find one at a yard sale, I'm first in line for it

You and I might be of the same generation.
I am 52 years old.
I gave up trumpet about 30 years ago and then started again about 5 years.
I'm just a mediocre amateur, but I love to play my slow ballads.

Hello MORRIS!One of my horns is a Getzen Rosetone from around 1939-40.The other is a 1947 Selmer/Bundy in sterling silver,It is a beautiful example of a horn from that era.I am always looking for that special horn.I found my Getzen at a pawn shop and my selmer at a golf store of all places!!!

Welcome, Gregory. The most rare horn I own is this 1870 Henry Lehnert Bb cornet. It was made in Philadelphia and has "Allen" type rotary valves. Nothing unusual about where it came from, though - a Civil War artifact show and sale in Gettysburg.



My most odd place I found a horn was at a junk auction way out in the Alabama countryside on a Saturday night about 20 years ago. It was a 1955 Bach Mt. Vernon Strad, and I won it for $60! To everyone else, it was just an old trumpet - I was the only bidder who knew what it was.

Gregory, you might be mistaken on the Getzen trumpet you mentioned. A Rosetone model doesn't ring a bell to me. Regardless, the first Getzen trumpets weren't built until 1947.

Nice! I've always wanted to be able to go to a pawn shop and find an unbelievable trumpet, but alas! There aren't too many trumpets here in Beijing. My dream vintage would either be an Olds Super Recording, Martin Committee Deluxe, or a Mt. Vernon Strad. Don't know too much about the Conns though.

I love puzzles / riddles, including trying to identify trumpets.

I can't find any Internet mention of a Rosetone trumpet by any maker.
But I keep in mind that I often cannot find any Internet mention of other models, too, such as the Holton trumpets and cornets that were made in France in the 1960's. But we know they exist because they occasionally appear for sale on eBay.

Any chance that you could post photos of the Rosetone?
It would be fun to compare its features with the Conn and Holton instruments that were also made back then.

I pulled a trumpet out of a trash dumpster one time in about 1985. It looked pretty onld and was missing the main slide. It had no name on it, only a beautifully engraved elk on the bell. It was brass and it seemed to have nice valve action. I kept it in a box for years until our church began asking for old horns to take to Haiti to help start a church band there. I gave them the elk horn and they took it and had it repaired. and shipped it off to Haiti. I never did find out what kind of horn that was. At the time I was into guitar and not paying much attention to horns. Does anyone know what that might have been?
