![]() | why, hello there Well, obviously I am new to this site, or why would I be posting on this form, right? I just happened to stumble upon this trumpetmaster page, and my eyes lit up. I am by no means a professional, but I do enjoy playing so very much. I am sure 99.99% of you will either not read this at all, or if you do, you won't really care, but for the .01% that just might, I will tell a little about myself: First off, I am 23 years old. Been playing trumpet since 5th grade. Not until my sophomore year of high school however did I really begin to try. I became pretty good. 2nd best my soph year, and 1st chair my jr. and sr. years. Now, after high school, I don't have the chance to play as often as I'd like. In my town, we have a "City Band" that performs 6 weeks every summer at the park. Now that I do not have the opportunity to play, I seem to want to more and more. I just became a father 8 months ago, which put my practicing on hold. Before he was born, I would pull out the horn for one, two, sometimes even three hours a night. I was really getting a lot better. My worst thing when it comes to playing, is my heavy tongue. I can not seem to spit out the notes fast enough at times, when needed. Also, I am just no good at marches and songs with a lot of up beats. don't know why, I just can't do it too well. I manage, but its not easy, and takes a lot more concentration on my part. I do not have a fancy horn, or mouth piece. Bach Strad, 3c, and 14c4 mouth piece's. Can anyone suggest a mouth piece that might give me a deeper sound? I have rambled on now quite long enough. I would really like to talk with many of you, and maybe get some idea's on how to get better, maybe get some idea's on artists, so i can buy some more cd's. I have Louis Armstrong, and Miles Davis and such, but what are some of your favorites? Also, I wanna get my son a trumpet by the time he's 4 or 5, any suggestions? just a standard student horn to start? or maybe something a little better? Last edited by dovod; 06-13-2008 at 01:21 PM. |

Any way, I'm sure you will get a lot of responses to you questions. BTW, I started at age 6 so that's NOT too young. Hang on and the givers of advice will soon be upon you! Again, Welcome! -cw-

As for the heavy tongue, don't worry--just pop into multiple tongue mode early and enjoy! (BTW, it is kind of my job to harass Chuck here, so don't be afraid!--lots of nice folk to be found at TM!)

![]() | Re: why, hello there it says new father because i went back and edited it :) heh. As for the tongue thing, I do what I can. One reason I am not so good is because all through high school and everything, I always blocked the air with my throat, instead of my tongue. It wasn't until I got some private lessons from a man here in town that he insisted on me using my tongue. I'm getting better at it, but it's hard to teach an old dog new tricks sometimes, you know? Bad habits are hard to break, though I think I am coming along nicely. ~David |
