Buddy Rich 1983-1984 ?

Tony,

I saw Buddy Rich back in 84 in Columbus, Georgia and then a week later at South Georgia College. The Lead trumpet player was a short stocky guy ... I don't think it was you ... was it? His "Planet Jazz" album had just come out. He fired the bass player at the Columbus, Georgia gig and had a sit in bass player from South Georgia College at the South Georgia College gig.

Hey!

No, wasn't me. I came on in Jan. 1986 and played 4th.

Possibly Tony Gorusso? He was doing the band around that time.

Could it have been Doug Clark? I think he was playing lead with BR around that time.

Re: Buddy Rich 1983-1984 ?

I saw Buddy Rich at Disneyland back in '85 (or was it '86?). After one of the tunes, someone yelled from the rear of the audience, "NOT BAD FOR AN OLD GUY!!!!" Buddy turned beet red, got up from his drumset, and gave the guy the one-fingered salute.

I'm pretty sure Disneyland never had Buddy back after that.

Re: Buddy Rich 1983-1984 ?

I do not believe it was Tony or Doug. Guy was short and built solid like a bodybuilder and he had that swelling neck thing going on when he would play (like Bill Chase). This would have been in 1984 I believe. I know that they were pushing Buddy's new Planet Jazz album at the time.

Good luck finding out who it was! Buddy's lead players had a half-life of about two weeks.

Re: Buddy Rich 1983-1984 ?

Nope, not Greg. He was with Buddy in 1981...he's also not short or stocky.
