![]() | "Chicago" You ever played the book on this one? An area theater co. is doing it in Sept. and I am doing the trumpet stuff. This Co. likes to do the real broadway book, but unfortunatley doesnt like to hire enough musicians |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: "Chicago" Tony - I've never played this show, but it's very "period" and supposedly starts with a tpt. solo. I would think you should bring tons of mutes. The guys on the broadway production are John Frosk and Darryl Shaw. Good luck! Tony |

![]() | Re: "Chicago" Chicago is a fun show. The only thing is that you sit on stage on a large tiered bandstand, so you have to wear a tux. But you get a great view of the action! As I recall, yeah, there's a load of mute changes, bring 'em all, including solotone, and flugelhorn. The book is very well written, lots of independence between the parts, little solos here and there (all written out). I remember one weird marking that said "Stravinsky growl" - wasn't quite sure what he was referring to...? Anyway, you should really enjoy this show. The Broadway scene here in South Florida has dried up a lot, thanks to self-contained shows and reduced orchestrations. Be glad you're working! Good luck! Chas

![]() ![]() | Re: "Chicago" Do you have a solo tone mute? Beg, borrow or order your solo tone mute now. It took 8 weeks to get mine from an internet site. Fortunately, I was able to borrow one. (Not for Chicago.)

![]() | Re: "Chicago" Yep...solo trumpet (with plunger) starts the whole shebang. Cleverly written and a ton of fun. A mute juggler. I remember the first time I played it. I got warned to keep my eyes front as this gal in fish net stockings slid (or was that "slithered"?) up through a trap door in the floor right next to my chair. I think we had to play not long after that too...ha. If you have some nice looking folks in your production...you will have to get the oogling out of your system before opening night. hahahhah

![]() | Re: "Chicago" Yeah, Brad - The first time the girl popped up I almost lost it. After that I always had a whispered remark ready for her..."I'm sorry, may I see your ticket?" or "Hey, you forgot your axe!" or "My, can it be Groundhog Day already?" You have to make your own entertainment sometimes! :^)

![]() | Re: "Chicago" I sub on the B'way show. Both parts call for straight, cup, plunger, Solo Tone and Harmon with stem. There's only one tune played Harmon with stem removed (it's in Act I), and plenty of time to make the change. And flugel - both parts. Lots of big solos in the 1st trumpet book (1st 4 bars of the show is all 1st trumpet by yourself), and a few in the 2nd book. I have yet to figure out what a "Stravinsky growl" is, tho! It's a terrific show and lots of fun to play. Sitting next to John Frosk is like getting a lesson on how to play every single note in the show. I feel guilty for not writing him a check for the lesson....not guilty enough to actually write that check, but guilty nonetheless. Darryl Shaw is equally as fine a player, too. The B'way show is coming up on 11 years of performances with no signs of slowing down. Be glad you're not a trombone player - there is a 2-bar vamp on "Roxie" that goes on and on and on....and they have to play it, while you get a nice break!
