Re: clear-tone mute / solo-tone mute

Wizard of Oz calls for solotone must on one piece. I used the Humes & Berg stonelined clear tone mute for the part just last night.

Re: clear-tone mute / solo-tone mute

I seem to remember Chicago having Solotone stuff.

Re: clear-tone mute / solo-tone mute

I have a vintage Shastock Solotone which I dearly love. Has anybody tried the Walt Johnson "Gatsby?"

Tony --- Horntrader.com in L.A. sells the Johnson solotone. You are right, it's a better mute than the H&B.

Kevin Seeley (seeleymusic.com) has the Johnson Gatsby. I just got one but haven't tried it out yet. I haven't tried the HB, so I wouldn't have anything to compare it to.

Re: clear-tone mute / solo-tone mute

I'm playing in the pit for Chicago the next few weeks. The lead book calls for it in at least 15 of the charts, but I don't have one and can't get one before our dresses start. The good (relative term) news is my second player can't get one either, but we need to use something - what mute does a solotone's sound most closely resemble?

Harmon, with the stem in. You might even try extending the stem some. The solotone would be louder though; it's primary advantage. I play in a big band that has hand-written transcriptions of some of the old standards that may never have been published. Ignoring the legality of all that, there are a number of old arrangements (it seems like quite a few of them are Sinatra/Nelson Riddle charts) that pit a section of harmon-muted trumpets against the rest of the band in full wail. This may have worked in the recording studio, and may have worked in a live setting with sensitive musicians (who through some quirk of fate happen to play any other instrument than trumpet), but in our band it's a guarantee that the trumpets will be buried. Every member of our trumpet section owns a solotone (or knock-off thereof), and we're not afraid to use them.

Re: clear-tone mute / solo-tone mute

I agree with John. Harmon with stem (slightly extended) will be the closest thing to a solotone/cleartone mute.

Tony,

You probably already checked Rod Baltimore's store, but last time I went there to look for the Walt Johnson cup mute, he had a couple of the Gatsby mutes. No cups, sadly, but Gatsbys galore. Maybe there are still some there?

Re: clear-tone mute / solo-tone mute

We are currently performing a run of "The Producer's" at Coeurd'Alene Summer Theater in Coeurd'Alene, Idaho. It calls for a solo-tone in the 1st Trumpet part.
