| Pianissimo User | Getting to a gig in New York Hey Tony, I'm curious, how does a musician in New York get to a gig at say, the Village Vanguard? I know that parking is impossible and cabs are expensive. What do you do? Thanks, M P.S. Feel free to laugh at this one! :) |

| Re: Getting to a gig in New York Matthew - That's actually a good question. I live about 50 miles north of NYC, so I take a commuter railroad (1 hour) which gets me into Grand Central. If my gig is in midtown (most theaters and many recording studios are there) then I'll just walk (15 mins.). When the job is not a walkable distance from Grand Central, I'll take the subway. Traffic is usually so bad that the subway ends up being faster than a taxi (and cheaper). It's not bad for me, but I feel bad for bassists & cellists when I see them trying to navigate their instuments in the subway. The drag about living far away is that I have to leave 2 - 2 1/2 hours to get to work everyday. Tony |

| Re: Getting to a gig in New York I grew up in Chicago and after CSO concerts I saw several of the players on the same el platform that I was on waiting for train. The Lyric Opera orchestra was the same way. |

| Re: Getting to a gig in New York Nick- Carrying 3-4 horns in a gig bag on your back, and maybe even adding a case in your hand is still much easier than carrying a double bass up and down all the stairs in the subway system, around hundreds of people moving the opposite direction, and trying to get onto a crowded train with everyone glaring at you! |
