Bob Grier has a spectacular aura about
Re: How far in should a cup mute be?

My rule of thumb for straight and cup mutes: When the low G speaks well the fit is right and it will be in tune. With a H&B standard cup the tips will almost touch the bell. With a mica, Shastock, Robinson, Denis Wick, Tom Crown this works out to about a 1/2 in gap between the bell and the edge of the mute. If the cup is up against the bell the sound will be muffled and out of tune. A lot of players in large ensembles like to use a Dennis Wick with the cup all the way out. While the Wick never gives a true traditional cup sound, the extended cup lets the player be heard. I've listened to too many players use a cup or harmon mute in large ensembles and they are never heard. I always increase my volume to match the music. Conductors like this. I get the best cup sound from a properly adjusted H&B or Robinson.

A champagne bottle cork fits on the top of the Bach mute perfectly!

I also shoot for a 1/2 inch gap. If the part says "tight cup" I just jam it in farther. (insert jokes here).

That's handy - and it would stop the beer going flat too quickly too.

Hitman0042 can only hope to improve
Re: How far in should a cup mute be?

I guess until it fits in properly. But you shouldn't jam it in cause you might damage the brass.

Lol its funny how I'm talking like a professional.

What do you know about mutes, if you don't even know how to play an A on the trumpet?
