![]() | How far in should a cup mute be? Tony--- I had a minor discussion with another Trumpet player. This player believes the Cup mute (what ever you use, H&B Mica-Mute, Standard H&B or Ray Robinson) should be all the way in. So far in that the end of the cup fits flush against the trumpet bell. I thought the cup should be in when it is in tune and there it should stop? For my horns I usually have about a 1/2" gap between the bell and the tip or rim of the cup When playing a chart requiring a "Tight Cup" how far in should you have your standard, average, run of the mill H&B cup? Should the end tips touch the bell or should there be a gap? Or do you wait for the music director to shout at you for being too loud or too quiet then adjust the cup? You comments? John |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: How far in should a cup mute be? John - I used to carry around an adjustable cup mute but got too lazy to deal with it. Now I just bring my Humes & Berg "Mic-a-mute". If you take off the rubber piece, it acts as a Ray Robinson mute (my personal fave), without the cup falling off (as is always the case with the Robinson). I also shoot for a 1/2 inch gap. If the part says "tight cup" I just jam it in farther. (insert jokes here). TK |

![]() | Re: How far in should a cup mute be? Thanks Man for the info-- Most Classical oriented players use and swear by the Denis Wick adjustable cup. It's a good mute but a little dark and has "non-cup"sound. I use the Robinson mute for normal stuff and the Mica for tight cup. Lew Soloff turned me on the Ray Robinson mute---a great mute if you can find one. Later |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: How far in should a cup mute be? I agree. The Wick sounds very cool, yet never sounds like a standard cup mute to me. They are great for solos but not so hot in the section. Tony |

![]() | It might be easier to store peanuts in your straight mute. A bottle of beer should fit into the flugel bell, then just pour into the plastic cup mute when the conductor isn't looking. Wow, I think I've thought about this a little too much!
