Tony, last time i saw Steely Dan was at jones beach with you and Cornelius- rest in peace my brotha-.which was just an incredible show. The horn section last night was really ...um... well um......adequate. They had Jim Pugh on bone but the sax player just wouldn't hit on any of key phrases that make the solo's click for the audience.(me)It was a fun show and Mike Mcdonald was great but man they really could have used you......I hope i'm not coming off like a prick but the sax player was playing very outside like in a jazz trio instead of a rock show(i hope that makes sense) At any rate, my friends and i really missed the old section last night.Jon Herington was his usual incredible self..man...he is so damned musical with incredible technique.....Everyone Feel free to spank me if i'm out of line, it's just how i feel.

I've always thought Jacob Riis Beach,south on Flatbush Avenue and across the Gil Hodges Memorial Bridge into the Rockaway's was a better venue for music than Jones Beach in Hempstead,LI,NY.

Yes, we all miss Cornelius. He went way too early.

I think that Fagen really likes to have sax players that push the envelope harmonically. I know the saxophonist, and he is a tremendous talent. He probably could have played in the style that you mentioned (more rock/pop), but I honestly think that those guys love hearing him stretch out a bit.
Also - you are absolutely right about Herington ... he is amazing. He can fit in any situation and make it happen.

Driving around today, I was listening to "Two Against Nature" again. Tony, did you play on that one? There are a couple of horn hits on "Janie Runaway" (among many others) that are just too good to be true.

And about stretching out... That's the record that got me into Chris Potter. But I suppose what's so amazing about him playing there is how someone with so much technique just lays it in the pocket.

No, I didn't play on "Two Against Nature", just the album after that, "Everything Must Go". It was probably Michael Leonhart on trumpet - he's the regular guy.

Chris Potter is one of those special players who has the jazz harmonic language coupled with a great sense of pop ("in the pocket") time.
