![]() ![]() | Into the Woods Tony, A local high school is going to perform, "Into the Woods," Spring of 2009. I just watched the DVD (152 minutes) and decided the lead trumpet is very important in this musical. More than likely I will be asked to play the part. Where can I get a copy of the lead trumpet part? How many trumpets are required? I hope only two. I may have to learn to circular breath. There are some notes held a very long time followed by a series of eighth notes or faster. Do you or anyone have experience with this musical? We need to talk.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Into the Woods "Into the Woods" is a one trumpet show. The part is written for trumpet in C, this is the horn I played on Broadway. There are some passages that require triple tonguing, these should be practiced. The show had a piccolo trumpet double, but that seems to have disappeared. Think chamber music, it's a very straight show. I loved playing it. Wilmer

![]() ![]() | Re: Into the Woods I've never played the show. Wilmer would be the guy to ask about that, so there you have it! Wilmer - is it true that Wynton came in to sub for you on that show? TK |

![]() | Re: Into the Woods Having performed it one time, and I'm mostly a commercial player, "Into the Woods" is a naked show for the Trumpet; all legit. You break a note and everyone knows. I had to borrow a "C" Trumpet thats how NOT a classical player I am. Unfortunately I have to perform it again in the Fall. I have to borrow another C horn. I think Picc is in to make some of the higher lines cleaner and easier---less strident. This seems to be the trend with more Orchestral shows. Plus the Xtra horn pay (in rare cases) is also a factor. I have the soundtrack and both versions: Vanessa Williams and Bernadette Peters. I like the Bernadette Peters version better. Mr Wise was magnificent on it. 3C |

![]() ![]() | Re: Into the Woods I am back from ITG 2008. Thank you very much for your replies. I have the Bernadette Peters CD and hence my questions. The trumpet is the show. I will talk with the conductor and find out if he has me in mind. I doubt he knows it is for C and piccolo. I own a very good Bach C and the same pic as Wilmer. Wilmer, If you can get me the address of the music owner I would appreciate it. I will rent a copy for the next nine months if that is what it takes.

Hal Leonard - The second trumpet part is, I suspect, just a transposed part for Bb trumpet. Wilmer

![]() | Re: Into the Woods I played the show several times with the original C part, and used an A picc for the high fanfares, it projected a bit more and gave it a bit more "umph" for lack of a better term...I would be interested to know if Mr. Wise used picc at all in the original...? I've always thought of it (both as a player and the times I've conducted it..) as much more like chamber music than the traditional pit orchestra, btw, if it makes you feel any better, the bassoon part is even more difficult!!! |
