Lessons?

Hi Tony,

So I think I'm doing pretty well in Minneapolis. I'm taking your/John McNeil's advice of taking every gig and free rehearsal I can and the calendar is slowly starting to fill up (with increasingly more gigs than free rehearsals even!).

My question is about contacting other freelancers. I've been able to meet the guys in the orchestra by taking lessons or playing in master classes, but a lot of the top freelancers don't teach, or if they do, they primarily teach beginners or high schoolers. I guess it goes back to the taking every gig you can mantra, but are there other ways? If some new guy in town calls you to go read some duets for fun sometime, is that a faux pas?

Thanks so much,
Jimi

Re: Lessons?

Hi Jimi -

I think that you could probably just be honest. Tell them that you're new in town & would like to play for them and receive some guidance. (That may or may not fall into the "lesson" category.) Or just mention that you are looking to freelance, would appreciate any help, and would be happy to play for them if they would like. I always find that being honest (& humble) can help too!

Jimi,
By starting this thread at TM, everybody in Minneapolis already knows who you are and what you are thinking about. You have no choice but to be honest now!

That's true. I've been fortunate to have met a lot of TMers from Minnesota and even got a few gigs through this site!
