siarr has a spectacular aura about
More oddball mute markings

Tony,

Reading the recent thread on different rather bizarre mute indications reminded me of when I played "Chicago" several years ago. As I recall, there was a marking in the second part asking for a "Stravinsky" growl. The closest I could think of for that would be a fast fluttertongue as in the Rite of Spring. Any insights? Also, if I remember correctly, there was also a small lick with flugel plus plunger (?). Mutes aside, it was a very fun show, especially when the scantily-dressed blonde popped up through the trapdoor next to me on the riser! After that first time I always had a line ready for her - "May I see your ticket, please?" or "Is it Groundhog Day already?" Hey, you gotta make your own entertainment in this business!

Thanks and best wishes,

Chas Reskin

Re: More oddball mute markings

Hi Chas -

I have not played "Chicago" except for a few tunes at Broadway-type benefits. Flugel with plunger? That's a new one for me! As for "Stravinsky growl", I think your instincts were correct - a fluttter. From what I've heard there are some nice visual moments in the show too

Re: More oddball mute markings

I've been subbing a bit more on the B'way production, did the matinee this past Sunday (John Frosk is a GOD! - more on that later), and yes, that's what we do with the Stravinsky growl - it's in the tune "Roxie."

The Flugal w/ plunger (also on "Roxie") is just hand held in front of the bell - we don't do any wahs, nor use plunger.

geez...LOTS of quick mute & horn changes. There's one tune that goes from open trumpet / a few bars rest / to flugel / 2 bars rest / to trumpet w/ Solo Tone, with the flugal to muted trumpet happening on a page turn - oy vey!

To be honest, as much as I'd like to take a peek at "Go To Hell Kitty's" entrance on the banister...the solo that John plays at that time has my total attention (plus I still hafta play my part)...every note that man plays is golden.

Yeah, I definitely remember that section with the flugel/solotone trumpet switch. As I recall, I had the muted trumpet on my lap while I played the flugel part, than vice-versa. Other than the mute headaches I really enjoyed playing the show - it's fun when the parts are so independent and everyone gets a little solo once in a while. Nice having the best seats in the house, too!

Cheers,
Chas

Re: More oddball mute markings

I played "Chicago", but they only hired one trumpet!!!! I was playing a hybrid book made up of both books, had horns in my lap, mutes under my legs, and had a Bass Clarinet fall on me during one of the tunes!! Ah yes, happy times

I enjoyed my Stravinksy Growl, and so did some of the dancers :-0 I got a compliment almost every night (he he)

Great show, but hard to keep your eyes on the music.

Re: More oddball mute markings

TMers,

A "Stravinsky" growl? Can anyone cite an example of this in Stravinsky's music? Louie Stravinsky (a grandson and friend of my son at Bard) maybe, but not Igor :)

Best,
EC

Ed -

Keep in mind, the writer asking for the "Stravinsky growl" is the same person who asked for "flugel with plunger"!

I'm thinking these markings should be taken with a bucket of salt.

He could be thinking of the muted 32-note triplets 1 bar after rehearsal # 134 in Sacre (which are flutter-tongued on several recordings). There are also several muted flutter-tongue notes in Agon. Or, he could just be playing with our heads. I'm inclined to believe the latter.

Best,
Chas
