OZ

Hey Tony,

Great clinic again at the NYSSMA Conference. My school's musical this year is the RSC version of The Wizard of Oz. I'll be playing the Trumpet I book, know anything about it?

Re: OZ

Thanks!

I did a short run of "The Wizard of Oz" several years ago at Madison Square Garden. My memory isn't so great but I seem to remember that it was a fun, well paced show to play. And not too long, maybe less than 2 hrs. I do recall some fast tonguing passages.

Maybe someone else out in TM land has played it. (?)

Re: OZ

Thanks for the plug Dylan. Our show runs roughly 2.5 hours including intermission. Obviously, as with any musical, bring your mutes. The book on this tour calls for straight, cup, Harmon (with and without stem, so find it if you've 'misplaced' it), solo tone, and plunger.

The book is a lot of fun to play and as Tony says is well paced. There are not that many big blow numbers, but you'll want to shed the Cyclone and the Jitterbug. Tempos on those numbers will depend on your production and what is going on on stage but be prepared for anything and ranging to some high C's and a high D or 2(not that bad).

There are some quick tonguing passages and some that may fall in the crack of single and double, so work on being able to both (slow double, fast single).

But the best advice anyone can give you is to have fun and play music. Don't play not to miss, that's expected, but go for it and make some music. It's a fun book. Be prepared and play well. Let us know how it goes.

All the best,

Chris

Re: OZ

I did a last-minute sub on WOO a few years ago in Long Beach CA., got there about 5 minutes before curtain - no time for any kind of talk-thru or much looking thru the book.

As I recall it was just like the Judy Garland movie with the addition of Jitterbug.

Jitterbug, btw, was in the movie but was cut.

Some pretty interesting trivia on the movie: The Wizard of Oz (1939) - Trivia
