JonathanShaw has a spectacular aura about
Practice Routine

I'm at a point where practicing is my hobby and something I enjoy doing, but I have yet to find a good consistant practice routine that I can do everyday and be productive. I find myself coming out of the practice room feeling like i didn't get anything done regardless of how much time i spent in it.
My Question is what is your daily practice routine, and is there a way your found it other than process of elimination
Thanks
J

Re: Practice Routine

3 sessions a day, one warm-up/long-tones/caruso (exactly what it is depends on the day), one music (just playing music, etudes, solos, etc.), and one technical (clarke technicals, double tonguing, sloshberg)
All between 30-40 minutes long, a few hours apart

I went to this when I felt I didn't have the endurance for each of the individual things to work on, so i broke it up

Re: Practice Routine

I usually start off with long tones and slurs. Move on to my technical studies to get my fingers moving then onto music and solos. Overall I need to work on my range so in my practice routine I incorporate a lot of slurs.

Re: Practice Routine

J -

I'm ashamed to say that my routine is more maintenance now than practice. (Not that I don't practice sometimes too.) On days where work is going to be tough, I play less. When the work thing is light, I have to play more. Personally, I'm a big fan of lip slurs.

My question to you is: what are you practicing when you feel a lack of production? I ask this because we often practice things that we know rather than things that are tough for us. My guess is that if you sound great during your practice, you're not really "practicing", but just "playing". Attempt things that are a stretch for you and try to improve in small increments rather than all at once. (Our society is one of immediate gratification, and that certainly is the opposite of what we should be looking for in the practice room.) Go slow, take your time, and try to think "big picture".

(Let me know if you were looking for a more specific answer about my personal practice routine. My answer may have been too vague.)

Thanks -
Tony

Re: Practice Routine

Please do Tony. I am wondering myself. I know you play lots of different styles on a day to day basis. How much practicing do you do to keep on top of these things? Do you switch equipment often? How do you make sure you can play a double C in a big band one night then play a lyrical soft solo in the studio the next day?

Re: Practice Routine

I use Claude Gordons Systematic Approach because it is already laid out ... and ... because I have never had any private lessons. I like that Claude utilizes numerous method books and covers a lot.

Re: Practice Routine

For me too, it's now mostly about maintaining and being ready for just about anything. A "first thing of the day" type routine I like to use daily regardless is out of the "New Concepts for Trumpet" book by Allen Vizzutti. At the beginning of the book - it's called "Warm-up and Smooth Tones" I use #'s 3 - 15, you can play at different tempos and also mix up the order. I precede this first by blowing the lead pipe for about 3 to 4 minutes. I always feel like this sets me up to work on the other areas as I need or have time for. Kinda like streching before a walk....or run.
