![]() | Re: Recording Session Questions Tony, Ok, all of you Red Sox fans got a taste of winning and you liked it. It was long overdue I admit, and that's coming from a Sox hater. Imagine how the Cubs fans feel. My Yankees will rise like a Phoenix and win again!! Bob

![]() | Re: Recording Session Questions There's a lot of confusion about recording compensation. There is a union scale for demos, a higher scale for masters (recordings that will be commercially released, as on a CD). There is also a "limited pressing" scale. Nearly every other use/purpose also has its own scale; TV is one of the few that typically pays re-use, jingles often do also. These payments (disbursed each quarter through accounting-type companies like N.W. Ayer) should not be confused with royalties. Royalties are paid on sales, a certain percentage, and are almost exclusively paid to those who contribute as writers. Very, VERY rarely, a player who's integral to the track and has the juice to warrant it will be given a royalty deal. Sting sings two tracks on your debut album; the label gives him half a point. Something like that. There is NO re-use on most recordings. While I haven't worked full-time in the studios for a number of years, I've recorded in Nashville on-the-card (union) and off since 1984 (mostly playing bass or guitar). Neither I nor any single one of the 50-some-odd buds I have who do make their livings in the studios have ever, EVER seen a "contract" for a session as a sideman. Buyers, such as record labels, have agreements with the union, wherein scale, cartage, doubles, overdubs, etc. are laid out and priced. The leader will handle the card, which is a sheet you sign that has your name, instrument, etc. You get the call... show up at the studio and sign the card... play what's asked of you... a month or so later, you pick up a check at the Union, which has collected from the client. You write the union a check for work dues. Ten years ago, 250 would have been close to master scale... but as it was for TV, this could have (in a perfect world) paid some kind of re-use. Obviously, that's what they were "buying out," your re-use payments. Usually, a buyout situation pays more (as you're giving up future earnings). That's where Tony got had. Non-union sessions are open for negotiation by the player, of course, but I wouldn't hold my breath. If they weren't trying to get by on the cheap, it'd be a union session and it would pay scale of some kind. I WOULD ask about a "bump" in the event that the version of the tune that you play on is used for the contest/show. That kind of upgrade is common, like when you play on a demo and a label releases it as a master. They're paying you what amounts to demo scale. If it gets picked up, and isn't re-recorded, you should be upgraded to master at least, and if they're honest they should "run a card through" and pay TV scale with re-use. Hope some of that is helpful. Rusty Russell |
