Shrek?

Tony,
I hear that you are doing a new show called Shrek. Is this just like the Movie? What is the highest note you have to play? I know you've done tons of shows. Does this one rank up there with your favorites? Best of luck with it.

Re: Shrek?

B -

I am doing "Shrek", but have never seen the movie. The show seems quite funny, but who knows?

Highest notes: an opt. Ab, and several G's (including the last note of the Exit Music - lame!). Trumpet, Flugel & Piccolo Tpt.

It's fun to play except: a) we have to wear headphones (never fun to play with), and b) the trombones are right behind us. Luckily, they are very good.

Here comes a "back in my day" post
HEADPHONES!!!!!!
Back in my day we played "Dress-up" every night. We wore tuxs and sat at audience level. The conductor controlled the show dynamics, like playing an opera, he was the sound arbiter. No mikes on stage or in the pit.
We actually played pianissimo!
The trombones were guys like Jack Gale, Jim Pugh, Alan Raph and other players who played with taste.
.........then the sound guys came on the scene.
The band was buried, dressed in black or hidden.....or all of those things!
There were real strings, and in a couple shows I played, a grand piano!
And most of all............real conductors on the podium.
Ah, the good old days
Wilmer

Re: Shrek?

Tony,

Shrek isn't just a kids movie. There's a lot of adult humor and more than a little inside theater humor. You'd enjoy it!

I couldn't agree more! Hiding the orchestra below sea level is a real nail in our coffin. Out of sight, out of mind. Sad. And I do miss playing SOFTLY - not much of that is required anymore. The current "Gypsy" is fun just for that reason: onstage, dynamics, great charts, etc...

My girlfriend just bought the movie for me but I haven't checked it out yet. The show also has some inside theater stuff - it takes shots at many of the current broadway shows.

Payback can be a real b!tch. Me and my "can't handle a taste of my own medicine" personality will stay where I belong BEHIND the trombones!!
