You can get it in any hardware store. The little tub of Schilke stuff looks a bit more civilized in the case. |

![]() | Re: Slide Grease It's actually used in chemical and medical labs to get a good seal between two pieces of ground glass. Most people have seen a Bell Jar used with a vacuum pump to make a balloon get bigger or actually boil water in a vacuum. The vacuum grease forms the seal between the Bell Jar and the base. No reason why it shouldn't work as a slide grease. It's REALLY THICK, so you may not want to use it on your third valve slide. It's pretty inert too, based on slicone, not petroleum products. Here's a link with some info if you're interested: Dow Corning High Vacuum Grease - 976V - SPI Supplies

I tried some military grade silicone grease on my trumpet many years ago. The slides worked really well and I thought that I was on to something HOT. I had a 6 hour gig on the weekend, and about half way through, my valves got REALLY SLOW! The silicone grease had thinned out a bit and started to wander through the horn and scummed my valves up. You just can't wipe silicone off. I used a whole bottle of Al Cass that night - and learned my lesson. I don't know about this other stuff, I wouldn't try it before any gigs though!

![]() | Re: Slide Grease I just read an article on valves and oils etc and it mentions silicone based materials as being not so good for horns - i.e., brass etc., because they leave behind a crystalline deposit on the slide or valve. This eventually builds up causing damage. |
