tunefultrumpet has a spectacular aura about
Sweeney Todd

I'm wondering what this show is like for trumpet? I have the chance to play for a community production but I want to know if the part is substantial and interesting enough for me to give up a lot of family time to play.

Wilmer Wise is the resident expert on Sweeney Todd and most things Sonheim. i am sure he will chime in.

CNYTrumpet will become famous soon enough
Re: Sweeney Todd

Is it the full or alternate instrumentation? I did the Alt. version and it only has one trumpet book. I found it helpfull to practice some with the cd. I had fun playing it and felt I grew as a musician after. I seem to remember some tricky counting but that's Mr. Sondhiem for you. We even had the opportunity to meet Len Cariou, the origional Sweeney Todd, he came town for a theatre fund raiser dinner. Angela Lansbury sent us a congradulatory note too, which for our small community theatre group was really cool.

I think it is the alt. instrumentation with one trumpet. Thanks for the comment.

Re: Sweeney Todd

Tuneful -

I've never played it. But Wilmer is very well-versed in Sondheim. Hopefully he will chime in.

Good luck with it. It is intense music!

The show was scored for two Bb trumpets. I played the show on C trumpet, I think we were one of the first shows to use them. This show is a powerful theater piece. I played the full run of Sweeney, and I was mesmerized by the performances on stage. The Jonathan Tunick orchestrations are brilliant. This is a very straight show.

Re: Sweeney Todd

Wilmer,

I'm assuming that when you did it there was a pit orchestra and the pit an actors onstage? Were they doing any of the "Actors play instruments onstage" type staging that seems to be the norm now? I saw it in Atlanta like this, black box style, and would have really preferred a traditional pit from a musical standpoint, but the theatrical effect was interesting.

The original show had a full orchestra in the pit, the actors were quite busy scurrying around the huge set. Max Hollander, Loren's father, was the concertmaster. Jim Pugh was in the trombone section.
We were a 35 piece orchestra.
Don't get me started on the latest innovation, actors playing instruments.
"Company" sounded like a high school band
