Trumpet and pops orchestra?

Tony- I was wondering if you or anybody else had some suggestions for trumpet and orchestra for the first half of a Pops program. I was thinking of Peaslee "Nightsongs" but was looking for something perhaps even more jazz oriented. Does anyone know where I can find the string parts that Clifford Brown used on his album with strings? Thanks in advance.

Brandon

Hey Brandon -

I'm not familiar with the Peaslee piece. As far as "Clifford & Strings" goes, I've never heard of it being performed, but I'm sure that someone must have transcribed the string parts over the years.

My pops (soloing) experiences have been limited to Harry James-type stuff. You may want to contact someone who does that sort of thing on a regular basis: Byron Stripling, Gary Guffman, Jeff Tyzik, etc...

Let us know what you come up with.

Not so jazzy, but you could try some Mendez arrangements.

How about some Vizzutti?
His Emerald Concerto might suit the concert quite well.

Doc played the Floyd Werle Concerto with the Baltimore Orchestra when I was there. One movement has a duet with the contrabassoon, it was very effective.

Wilmer - does a recording exist of this piece? One of my best mates plays contra and we have been looking for a work to perform together sometime.

Brandon, as the master of double tonguing that you are, you could play the pi$$ out of the Monti/Mendez "Czardas".

Agreed Bob. One of the fastsest most natural double tongues I've ever heard. BAM whatever you decide on can we get some sound clips here after the concert.

Hey guys- Thought I'd let you know I've decided to do the Frank Proto "Carmen Fantasy." James De La Garza (trumpet on Beauty on the Beast) actually saw this post and got in touch with me to suggest it. Doc has a recording of it with the Cincinnati Pops which is amazing. There are definitely some challenging sections, so it should be a fun project. Thanks for all the suggestions, I'll let you know how it goes. (not until April)
