![]() ![]() ![]() | tuning Hi Tony, When I play lead and am playing up high I have to pull the main slide a little. When I play the next tune and I'm down low I have to pull back in. Am I doing something wrong? This only happens when I use the lead mouthpiece. It's a custom Monette. A B4lds1n that they made a little deeper and more of a V cup. I don't know what the numbers mean. When I played My Bach trumpet with a Zottola mouthpiece the problem was worse. I don't think I'm pinching when I go up. I can lean down into the notes and make them in tune. Thanks, Joe

![]() | Re: tuning Are you using a monette horn? My teacher had a "mid-size" shank and had horrible problems like that until he sent it back and made them put on a "normal" shank

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: tuning That can be tricky to diagnose. The first shot would be that perhaps you are not supporting enough in the upper register, causing the pitch to sag. Just a thought. In general, I must pull out quite a bit when using my lead mouthpiece. But then those "flat" notes (high D, Eb, and E) are (obviously) even flatter. I use many alternate fingerings. But above E everything seems to be back in tune. (Or at least as in tune as the notes below high D.) Are you flat across the board up there or just on those few notes? Tony |

![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: tuning Hi Tony, I'm not flat up high, I'm sharp. It's not one or two notes, it's the entire trumpet. In the lower register it's normal. If someone came to me with this problem I would think they are choking off to hit the notes causing the trumpet to go sharp. I don't think this is the problem but I'm open to all ideas.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: tuning To me it sounds like your really playing on the top of the note centers. I have to watch out when I am playing not to "push the center up" when I increase my intensity. Is it consistently sharp regardless of volume? If so that might be an indicator as well. -T

![]() | Re: tuning I've experienced this as well, I know how frustrating it can be. To try and a correct it, I put myself on the following regimen: 1st day practice everything....everything with a drone. 2nd day with a tuner. 3rd day by yourself. It should give you an idea where your tendencies lie. In performance if I feel the pitch getting funky, I try and really lock in the where the bass is. Above all....relax (for me the hardest part). -Kevin |
