Tone

Having problem getting a good tone, a lot of garble. My teacher said my lips are too tight and to practice blowing into the back end of the mouthpiece as a drill. Any other suggested drills?

Re: Tone

Does your teacher play the trumpet?

I think pedal tones would be helpful. Long tones as well. And play your mouthpiece off the horn. Play these as softly as you can.

Re: Tone

Dumb question- what are pedal tones? Yes, my instructor is a trumpet player.

Re: Tone

Pedal tones are pitches below low F#. The trumpet does not resonate for them and to play them requires relaxed chops.

Here's a link to an audio file by Eric Bolvin:

Re: Tone

I agree with all of the above and would add that you need to be listening to fine trumpet players in order to get a concept of what you want to sound like.
