| Favourite Solo Hi Ingrid, Phil from winnipeg here. I was wondering what is your favourite trumpet solo transcription to play. Do you have any favourite records that you play along with still? Cheers |

| Re: Favourite Solo That's a tough one Phil. Was just in Mexico with Phil Dwyer and the sound guy was using Kind of Blue to test the system. We both started playing along with everything (Phil nailing it much more than me). I realized that I can't play all of the solos on there yet, so that's on my list to clean up- Trane, Bill Evans, Wynton Kelly, all of them...want to be able to play them all perfectly because there are so many great melodies and SO many great 'language' tools in there. Favorite solo to play along with ( need to get it back under my fingers again too) Freddie, Birdlike. Person I play along with the most- Pops. Phrasing, melodies, feel, simplicity, etc.. I play with many vocalists as well... |

My favorite solo to play along to is Freddie's solo on Open Sesame. There are some really hip lines (of course..it's Freddie) about halfway through the solo. | |

| Re: Favourite Solo Very interesting topic. I'm transcribing Kind of Blue right now. Just finished "Freddie Freeloader". Not sure if I'm going to continue straight through, but I'd love to come back (after finishing other transcriptions I never finished and have always wanted to transcribe... :-p) and I'd love to take that approach: learn every solo, not just Miles' on "Kind of Blue". My god, Coltrane is a beast on that album, to say the least for the rest of the guys. Coltrane is just one of my other favourites, besides. I have a few transcriptions waiting for me though, and I need to get them done. I love Miles' solo on "Milestones". He plays some really cool stuff in that solo. Something that has interested me a lot lately is a solo I heard of Blue Mitchell on one of the Blue Note recordings. The song is "Good Humour Man"... D min. Blue's solo is outstanding, and the tune is right up my alley. Anyway, with all of that said, my favourite (and I know you asked her and not me, just putting in my 2 cents) solo to work on is Clifford's "Joy Spring". |
