| Rips and glisses? Hi I am a new member and I salute all of you. I am really a jazz clarinet player that in the past two years have selftaught to play the cornet (a Conn 1921 with a large bore). I am interested in Bix beiderbecke and I learnt several of his improvisations transcribing from the records, however I dont manage to do rips (for instance C to A or gliss from slightly lower than E to E. Is there any advice on how to do theser exercises to be able to do it? Now that I play (try to!) the cornet I fell in love with the intrument and I feel happy to have arrived to the point that I can ask these questions. Thank you Jussi |

| New Friend | Re: Rips and glisses? do you already practice lip slurs cause they helped me out a lot. once you accomplish that, it should be a little easier. it worked for me, but ull have to try it urself to see if it will work for u. good luck with the cornet, they r really fun to play. oh, and welcome. |

| Mezzo Forte User | Re: Rips and glisses? Bending notes may help...you will find plenty of bending exercises in the trumpte literature, or write your own. How about half valves technique, or slow valve movement to help the glisses? |

| Re: Rips and glisses? Is it crazy to suggest that a cornetist get themselves an old trumpet lead pipe and work on the idea of blowing through to get a feel of the wider intervals that the pipe has within it? I tried this with my 5 year-old niece (when she was three actually)..she has the most incredible control and range and doesn't seem to be hung up on finding her way around the horn once she gets back on the cornet. I think that she realized (unknowingly) from the beginning, that playing high or low were all the same feeling. It's pretty damned cute too I must add. Will put up some video on my site soon now that I am finally finished with some of the more major delivery items. |

When I try the half valve thing, I tend to sound really muted and stuffy. This makes it hard for me to blend one note to the other. Do you have any suggestions to help out ??? | |
