At Sea

I just got my copy of As Sea. It is excellent! FWIIW, coming from me, I am reminded of Miles at some moments and a lot of Kenny Wheeler at others - two of my favorite trumpeters (I have a lot of favorites..). This is a must have CD.

I am going to sit down and have my daughter, Natalia listen to this. She is a little on the fence about her music. She sings, plays EXCELLENT classical piano and plays pretty good alto sax. The music program at her junior high is just awful, and she struggles with trying to keep her work ethic up there, though she loves this soooo much that she's work hard no matter how bad the environment. Thank heavens she has the Merit Music Program to challenge and inspire her. But I digress... She is struggling with mixing voice study and jazz sax. I am trying to help her balance both, but I want to skew her towards jazz instrumentals a bit. Ingrid's wonderful CD will help me.

Now, my son will just love this CD! He is really interested in jazz artists who make MUSIC and are not slaves to grandstanding. This CD is so musical and beautiful that I know he'll "borrow" it from me. I have to keep bugging him to put my stuff back. He has tons of my LP's in his room! In any case, as he gets ready to finish off high school and then go to major in jazz studies next year, this will be a must have in his collection.

If you are ever performing in the Chicago area, Ingrid, please let me know. We'll be there! Also, say hi to Mr. Hadro, for me. He works for Artist Share and is a former NTHS student.

Peace.

Nick

It is a great CD. I bought mine a couple of months ago after learning about it on this forum! Highly recommended.

Re: At Sea

Sorry to go off-topic, but to Nick:
I see you're from Northern Suburbs in Chicago. I'm a jazz studies major at UNorthern Colorado and one of my friends is a trumpet player from there. Where's your son looking at for schools? I know there are a lot of great ones in your area.

Also, I bought the CD after seeing Ingrid here at Dazzle in Denver, and it was pretty great. Everybody here remembers the time Ingrid exclaimed that "brushes are for pussies". Great clinic/performances.

These are in no particular order.

Ooh, encourage him toward McGill! There is nothing more valuable than spending time in a different country, and Ed Caroll is there, isn't he? :)

Re: At Sea

The Maria Schneider Band is playing at The Harris Theater in Chicago on March 10th. Regular members of the trumpet section include Tony Kadleck, Laurie Frink, and Ingrid Jensen. And the rest of the band is awesome, too!!

Re: At Sea

hey all- thanks for the kind words. Just a quick note for all of you making the trek to the Chicago gig. We are only playing one tune for the gig, maybe two.
It's kind of strange (and wasteful as far as travel expenses and pollution go) I know, but we are only playing Buleria's (which will feature the fantastic playing of Donny Mcaslin and Greg Gisbert) - aside from that, there will be no other solos or stretching going on.

In the school discussion zone-had a great talk with a young player who has been over for some lessons recently and was very excited by her choice to take a year abroad on a Rotary exchange once done with high school. All of the schools you are mentioning are fine places to study, but honestly, if I hadn't taken the two years I took to goof off, work and play (a lot) after high school, I'm pretty sure I would have burnt out from information overload. I did go to the local college for two years, but it was such a light load and cost almost nothing, that I could live fairly freely, gig (GIG!),listen to a lot of music and really enjoy life 'after high school'. My biggest concern these days, as I visit many great jazz programs around the country (as a guest artist), is that the students are not able to really lead the music when they play. The teachers have become, in many ways, too good at giving them the right information (because things are SO accessible), and the students, who are great students and fine people, are not really made aware of what it means to take responsibility for the elements of the music that are the unspoken elements that really make 'jazz' a community event. In other words, they expect to be led and taught. Not all programs are this way, and yes-some people need structure to grow-BUT, imagine how much more able to deal (AND contribute) the students would be if they all took time to get a feel for the world and their voice in it, by playing and leading, studying on their own and creating a niche for themselves via 'the street' before investing their folks big bucks in 'jazz school'. My 'struggle and search' years were the BEST! Don't really want to do them again, but WOW for lessons that you don't get in school.
peace!
