Teachers & Influences Ingrid, I’ve heard that you had studied with Laurie Frink and Art Farmer. I am familiar with Laurie’s teachings, as I had studied with her. I am not familiar with Art Farmer’s teachings, but I am familiar with his playing, as I have been memorizing and transcribing his solos. In fact, if I had to list my top three current favorite players it would be Art Farmer, Ingrid Jensen, and John McNeil. What I am curious about is what Art had taught you in your lessons with him and is there a chance that his lyricism has influenced your playing? Anything that you can tell me about Art as a person or as a musician that is not known to the general public (even stories) would be greatly appreciated. What makes me very interested in your playing is that you make the technical sound so lyrical, musical, and artistic. To me, that is an amazing feat! What makes me interested in Art’s playing is that he is so lyrical with such a beautiful sound. In addition to these questions, I’d like to know who you would list as your main jazz influences. Are there any specific recordings that come to mind? Thanks for bringing your music to me and to the entire jazz community! It means a lot to me. Janell

Re: Teachers & Influences To Add to Janell's Question.......There is a small publication available thru Colins publications which is like a daily routine and suggested exercise routine by Art Farmer. If you are familiar with this book, I was wondering how closely it follows what he taught his private students.

Re: Teachers & Influences Sorry for the delay Janell and Tal, I'm new to the forum workings. I actually never studied with Art, just hung with him and sat in on his gigs on occasion. He played my recordings of Freddie Webster and Joe Wilder the one time I hung at his place in Austria. He was always practicing new things and learning new tunes. A very inspiring person to be around. Thank you for all of your kind words Janell, I don't know exactly how to answer all of your questions, the process is very involved. I know that when I got serious about my sound and my time that alot of my ideas flowed out of the horn alpt easier. THe more I play with good, listening players, the easier it is to get to the good stuff as well. I do have his book, it inspired me to really integrate the music (I need to learn and shed) into my routine. My lessons on my site go into depth on this.

![]() ![]() | Re: Teachers & Influences Mel Lewis and Friends is smokin. That's a serious lesson in perfect time. Freddie's on fire. Swana hooked me up with that when I took a lesson with him a few years ago (talk about good time). Great post! PS: How do you work on your time/articulation? |

Re: Teachers & Influences Thanks for sharing your ideas with me and answering my questions, Ingrid! You have so many influences, too (more than I ever thought). I’ll just have to check out that smokin’ recording of “Mel and Friends.” I’ll be looking forward to that list of recordings. I’ve got several other jazz compiled lists from Pat Harbison (his website) and John McNeil (his book). It will be interesting to compare the similarities and differences between all of them. I’d love to add more to my existing jazz collection. Janell

Re: Teachers & Influences Just got an add in the mail- Freddie with a bunch of great cats at the Iridium in April. Check out their schedule. Would go if I were in town then. It's been a long time since I've heard him live. I spent an entire day with Freddie once. Went to the cleaners, had lunch and then he had me play for him. I was 17 at the time and pretty nervous. He was the best, gave me some things to shed that I still do to this day.

Re: Teachers & Influences Hey Ingrid, love your stuff! Would you mind sharing some with us, like maybe one or two things he had you do? I'm always looking for new things to practice...although the list is getting longer by the day- Thanks, Andrew
