| New Friend | Theory Book I am trying to understand jazz theory on my own, and am pretty sure I have covered all of the basics. Are there any books that cover the topic of jazz theory well that you might suggest? I am playing, transcribing, and drilling anybody who knows more than me when I get the chance, and would like to have another means to learn. Thank you in advance for any suggestions. |

| Re: Theory Book You just reminded me of a book that helps me out over and over, The Jazz Piano book by Mark Levine. Since I am a wanna be pianist it serves two purposes, one to develop some technique and one to get a deeper understanding of harmony and yes, theory...they are pretty well intertwined I think.?? I think he put out a theory book as well. Very clear and inspiring stuff written by a true 'player'. |

| Forte User | Re: Theory Book If you need to understand theory period. Get the Benward & Saker Theory books. They start out assuming that you already know basic music theory, like basic count structures, things like that. its an awesome book. |

| New Friend | Re: Theory Book I'm pretty good with theory and understand all of the basics and plenty of stuff that is not basic, most of jazz for me now is just expanding my vocabulary and becoming better at applying what I know...I just would like a book to pad my theory knowledge. Thank you for the responses, I will order the Mark Levine book and may order the other set later on if I think it will be closer to what I need. (Plus I'm doing my best to learn piano) ~back to the practice room~ |
