But you can start with the music you like to listen to right now. Listen to melodies and solos in general, regardless who's playing them. If you like one player's particular style, get more recordings of that artist and keep listening. You can then start branching out with other artists of similar styles, and then other artists with differing styles as you listen and gain a greater understanding of what's going on with the playing. These artists don't necessarily have to be trumpet players, if you happen to really like what the music is doing. My first "jazz" CD was Chuck Mangione. It wasn't until shortly thereafter that I understood what was going on musically and got into different trumpet players, then sax/piano/guitar players, then started improvising, etc. . | |

Maynard Ferguson - nice to listen but don't start by trying to play as high as he does Wynton Marsalis - if you want to incorporate effects in your impro he is the man...one of the most inventive improvisers I have ever heard...some peolpe on TM may disagree, so that's MY OPINION. Reactions of other players can be quite different on what he does...yet Nobody can deny that he is an awesome musician Harry James - Great sound...I wonder how he get missed in this list Are non-trumpet players allowed? I guess they are Al Jarreau and Bobby McFerrin |

| Re: who to start listening to... Who are you listening to now?Who is giving you the bug to start improvising? From your answer we can maybe group the players that were influenced by each other and guide you to some great Jazz History books(Ray Vega seems to be pointing that out from the initial choice of artists)! |

| Re: who to start listening to... Hey everyone! thanks for all of the great input on this.Keep it coming! I'm following along and find this question to be a pretty interesting one. My early days were filled with good 'background' jazz and there was never one moment that I can clearly pinpoint as to when I really 'got into' jazz. More like it got into me. My point being that we are all so different in our evolution and development as listeners and players and it's really hard to know which player or album will be 'the one'. As I was listening to Louis, I was also into Ska music, Chet Baker, Spyro Gyra, heavy metal and many other sounds and styles that spoke to me at the time. At the same time I was glued to the CBC jazz shows that were on the radio late at night, often sneaking my radio back on after my parents went to bed and listening for hours to an incredible variety of jazz styles. I suggest finding some good radio stations and also downloading some of the NPR Jazz profiles podcasts. Like any good relationship, the more you get to know the person, or persons-the more you can appreciate them. Speaking of appreciate- gotta get my chops back together here for another 8 sets of music with Maria this weekend! Happy day after Turkey gorging! Ingrid |
