Re: Brandenburg 2 Live on Baroque Trumpet

A simply wonderful performance! Made all the more thrilling because it's a live performance. You can be very pleased with it.

However, if you're open to a few observations I would submit the following - The trumpet is much too loud and bombastic and the ensemble is considerably out of balance because of it (certainly the position of the microphone doesn't help). Remember it's NOT a solo trumpet concerto! Obviously you have the chops to play more delicately and reservedly. More finess certainly would fit better in the context with the other solo instruments. Perhaps you shoud try to think more like a woodwind player rather than a brass player. The trumpet is a musical instrument afterall.

Disagree and villify if you will. And no, I couldn't do better.

Dr. Zink- WHATEVVVERRRRRR!! :)

Nate - great job. I play- or should I say attempt to play- this instrument. And I have played the Brandenburg, albeit on picc. So i am indeed impressed!

And I see that you are performing with Eklund- I hope you fellows come to the Seattle area sometime. What instruments and mouthpieces do you use other than the 4 hole Egger historical model?

Re: Brandenburg 2 Live on Baroque Trumpet

I'm with Zinc.

Concerto Grosso...

Plenty a chops...why not?

YouTube - Bach - Brandenburg Concertos No.2 - i: Allegro Moderato

YouTube - Bach - Brandenburg Concertos No.2 - iii: Allegro assai

I couldn't do better either. It might be nice to hear someone play it on a good coiled F natty. The bell in the other direction might make balance easier/better.

Not to get off topic...but, check out the comments below the video. Am I crazy? I was under the impression that the No. 2 was originally written for the instrumentation used in this video.

It sounded perfectly balanced to me considering the difficulty of the work. And it being a live concert. I would Imagen that it would be much harder to play softer considering that it is a smaller baroque trumpet as well as in order to play that high, one has to keep the air going into the instrument. That would take a steady flow of air to keep the register.
But that is just my opinion....

That is probably the best of your youtube videos Nate. Looking forward to seeing you again some time in the future.

Re: Brandenburg 2 Live on Baroque Trumpet

also, the ensemble was Ars Lyrica directed by Matthew Dirst in Houston. The hall was Zilkha hall in dtown Houston. A fantastic hall, but VERY live. I was quite nervous, I have to admit, as most of the HSO brass section was sitting right in front of me in the second row!

Cheers all-
Happy baroque trumpeting,
Nate
