WTT Maynard Ferguson Charts [PDF-only]

As the title says, if you've got a Maynard Ferguson chart in the PDF format, and would be willing to trade for one of the charts listed below, go ahead and shoot me an email over at ImNeverNotified@gmail.com; here's the list of charts I own:

25 or 6 to 4 - Chicago [5-4-4-5]
Gospel John - Maynard Ferguson [5-4-4-4]
MacArthur Park - Maynard Ferguson [5-4-4-4]
Maria - Maynard Ferguson [5-4-4-4]**

I also have the "Jazz Stylings of Maynard Ferguson" book, which is a 78 page book that includes a written version of the parts Maynard plays in the songs Chameleon, Conquistador, The Fly, Gospel John, La Fiesta, Maria, Mister Mellow, Pagliacci, and Primal Scream as well as the Piano part with their proper chord structures writting alongside. There is a guide inside the book that tells the reader exactly how One would go about transcribing the songs entailed. If you're into buying one book, and then transcribing the songs I've listed in this paragraph, this could give you an immediate nine more charts should you take the time to write them out!

** Maria has two first trumpet parts. What Maynard would read if he played the song exactly as written, and what Maynard was more inclined to "improvise up" as he actually played.

If you would like to talk more about this with me, you can reach me here: ImNeverNotified@gmail.com; I prefer Maynard charts to any other, however I might be willing to settle for a different one as well. Who knows what I'll like. :)

Re: WTT Maynard Ferguson Charts [PDF-only]

Hello,
I was just cruzin' around the site and stumbled on this thread. As a comeback player, there are a lot of new terms (at least to me) which which I am not familiar. I learned to play - and never progressed beyond - scored parts where every note is indicated. So, I do not recognize what you are referring to in your description of various 'charts'. Is there some information that you can point to which explains what these are and how they are used? I just want to know more about what is going on in this universe.
Thanks for your help.

Re: WTT Maynard Ferguson Charts [PDF-only]

Charts are a slang term (I'd assume) for the word "Scores" as in, "a written form of a musical composition".

Thanks for the tip. I guess I was assuming there was more to it because if the [5-4-4-5] notation. What does that part mean?

DIS is an unknown quantity at this point
Re: WTT Maynard Ferguson Charts [PDF-only]

NO! A "chart" is not the same thing as a "score." I'll let Pseudonym explain.

That refers to orchestration - in this case I'd assume 5 trumpets, 4 'bones, 5 saxes, 4 piece rhythm section. Could be wrong though.

As for charts, my understanding is that a chart has the instrument's line on it and also the underlying chords, which can then be used for improv.

Re: WTT Maynard Ferguson Charts [PDF-only]

I thought the instrumentation was always [Sax-Trumpet-'bones-Rhythm]; at least, that's how everyone I've ever seen notate it..

I was under the impression that a chart and a score were nearly the same thing. The chart is what the player reads, the score is what the conductor reads.

Drums, bass, guitar, piano... What's the fifth member of the rhythm section?

I saw a big band on Sunday night and they had five trumpets (split lead book), four 'bones, five saxes (one baritone, two altos, two tenors) and guitar, bass, drums, and keys in the rhythm section.

Re: WTT Maynard Ferguson Charts [PDF-only]

Auxiliary Percussion: tambourine, shakers, bells; something of the "percussive" nature that's not drumset. :)

Re: WTT Maynard Ferguson Charts [PDF-only]

Hmm... Not convinced...

Big Band instrumentation

Yes, there's auxiliary percussion in a big band at times, but that's not what it's referring to. 4 rhythm, 4 'bones, 5 saxes, 4+1 trumpets (normal 4 plus Maynard's part). The auxiliary percussion when I've seen it has been used because there have been 2 drummers and they've swapped between songs.
